But it's undeniable that many women find detoxes intriguing. "They give people a sense of control," Sandon says. Fasting may even have a short-term calming effect caused by the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, in response to the stress of not getting enough fuel (as in, a calming effect that's really not worth it because it's due to taxing your body). And the caffeine in some detox products can provide a shot of energy. But when the diet ends, the high fades and women crash, often feeling sick, sad, and ashamed they couldn't stick to their strict regimen, or that the results don't seem to last. Enter: cleansing again to regain the initial feeling, leading to a vicious cycle that can take a toll on both your body and mind.

In fact, a small size at common smoothie stores like Jamba Juice can often contain more than 50 grams of sugar. To be sure you don't end up with a total gut bomb, consider making smoothies yourself. Or double check the ingredient list at your favorite shops and supermarkets.
Many noncredentialed people claim to be experts in detoxification, and many seasoned health professionals are not well versed in detoxification protocols. Because detoxification programs can vary widely and may pose a risk for some people (such as people with multiple maladies, those who take multiple medications and pregnant or breast-feeding women), it is important to work with a credentialed health professional who understands your health status and goals and who is able to evaluate detoxification programs for safety and effectiveness. But while our liver is always detoxifying our bloodstream, it’s not necessarily working optimally. The truth is, our bodies aren’t necessarily equipped to deal with the burden they’re now facing. In phase one, toxins are made water-soluble by enzymes; and in phase two, toxins are bound to protective chemicals that neutralize them and allow them to be eliminated via bile or urine. "We're conditioned to think that if we don't devour everything on our plate, we are misbehaving," McKenna says. But if you keep munching even after you're full, you are using your body as a storage unit. If there's enough left over for lunch tomorrow, pack it up and put it in the fridge. Hearty, flavorful and full of fiber, Brussels sprouts make an awesome addition to a healthy detox diet. Not only can they promote regularity to get things moving, but Brussels sprouts have also been shown to boost liver health and enhance detoxification. In fact, one study published in Carcinogenesis showed that eating just 300 grams of Brussels sprouts daily was able to amp up the levels of detox enzymes by a whopping 30 percent. (2)
Count carbohydrates – “ Carbs” are found in all kinds of foods, including breads, pastas, fruits, dairy products and sugary foods such as desserts. “Complex” carbohydrates, such as whole grain bread, provide more nutrition than others. Sweets such as cake aren’t as good for you as whole grains and vegetables, and often are high in fat and calories. That’s why it’s better to save them for a treat.

When it comes to clean eating in America, it's extremely difficult. Everywhere you turn you are exposed to foods with high fat, high carbs, msg, and processed foods. It's truly a challenge but it's not impossible. This book was very practical with its instructions on how to go about trying to eat clean. Very understandable instructions and very easy to follow. Also, I love the different delicious recipes it highlights. I highly recommend this to anyone that is attempting to have a cleaner diet.

[...] The golden age of the colon in America was in the late 19th century when—perhaps influenced by a new emphasis on hygiene and proper sewage removal—serious-minded doctors developed the theory of colonic autointoxication. [...] The idea was that the intestines were a sewage system and that constipation, although never specifically defined, resulted in a cesspool within the body where food wastes would putrefy, become toxic, and get reabsorbed through the intestines. Some scientists also claimed that constipation caused fecal matter to harden onto the intestinal walls for months or years, blocking the absorption of nutrients (yet somehow not blocking toxins). [...] The beginning of the end of the (first) era of autointoxication came with a 1919 article in Journal of the American Medical Association by W.C. Alvarez, 'Origin of the so-called auto-intoxication symptom.' Soon after, and still to this day, direct observations of the colon through surgery and autopsy find no hardening of fecal matter along the intestinal walls. There's no cesspool either. Cesspools form from copious amounts of feces from entire neighborhoods, which is why crowded cities with inadequate sewage systems smelled so awful and why autointoxication made sense. [...] By the 1920s, colon cleansing was relegated to the realm of quackery.
These foods—notably vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains—should supply about 20 to 35 grams of dietary fiber a day, depending on your calorie needs. (Aim for 14 grams of fiber for every 1,000 calories, as advised by the  Dietary Guidelines for Americans.) Fiber slows the absorption of carbohydrates, so they have less effect on insulin and blood sugar, and it provides other health benefits. Try to fill three-quarters of your plate with produce, legumes, and whole grains—leaving only one-quarter for meat, poultry, or other protein sources.
In between meals, go ahead and have a snack. "When you go too long in between meals without eating, it is difficult to go into your next meal in control and avoid overeating,” Julia Levine Axelbaum, R.D., L.D., Bariatric Dietitian at NewStart Clinic, tells SELF. Of course, you'll want to be thoughtful about the kind of snacks you opt for. She explains that those that are high in protein, fiber, and complex carbohydrates will give you the energy you need to get through the day and keep you satiated from one meal to the next. On the other hand, those that are high in refined carbs and sugar will give you a sudden blood sugar spike that will eventually cause you to crash and feel even more tired.
“Research has shown that people who are into clean living are more about being healthy as a way of preventing disease, rather than looking to overcome one,” Greely says. “I’ve seen people eliminate wheat from their diet only to find their arthritis goes away, and others who’ve suffered hay fever their whole lives suddenly don’t have so much as a sniffle in spring.”
